In foreign lands, years ago when jellies weren’t invading the skies, this happened too. There was a language barrier then. There’s a trust barrier now. I can see it in the man’s face as he stands on a rickety porch. His eyes are mere slits and a cigar levered from his bottom lip. His potbelly peeks out from under his stained ribbed tank top and the elastic band of his charcoal gray elastic shorts aren’t holding up their end of the bargain either. He has a shotgun, too. It’s bigger than mine and it’s probably loaded with slugs, not birdshot.
The girl cowers behind me.
“Stay close,” I whisper. “But if he shoots, run a zig-zag.”
She eyes me squirrely. I know nothing apparently, but I do know this. We need a map or a mobile charger so that I can use my phone soon. I’ve had enough of this weird day and…
