Steve wasn't sure what made him do it. He found himself running through the debris despite the risk of injury to himself. When he rounded the corner, he understood exactly why she screamed. And was screaming still as a laser began to descend toward a gouge in her upper thigh.
"You won't feel this. Hold on. Be still," the medic said.
"Stop! Because one look at her expression and it all made sense," Steve yelled and rushed inside.
The medic stopped the laser and looked up at him. "It's all right. I have to stop the bleeding. I put a neuron blocker in place. She can't feel a thing. She's just panicked. See?"
Steve's eyes lingered on her. The gray putty-looking device was affixed to the side of her temple, and yet, he knew it made no difference at all.
Covered in her own blood, she stared back at him, a sea of blue, wide, and frantic.
"You're wrong. She feels every single thing you're doing because she's a hybrid. There's a neuro bypass. Am I right?"
